The Ocean Breeze Radome A/C Unit features a high-efficiency scroll or rotary compressor, marine-treated condenser coil featuring 14 FPI 0.028 thickness (optional copper-to-copper coil available), marine-treated evaporator coil, maintenance-free totally enclosed fan motors, and internal vibration isolation network for every single component connected to the internal chassis frame, which is also mounted on vibration absorbers. Condenser fans include a hub and high-torque, constant pressure, glass-reinforced nylon fan blades. Copper refrigerant line braided absorbers are deployed throughout the refrigeration circuit. Both concept and design are paramount to manufacture an air conditioning system to withstand vibration aboard ships. The Ocean Breeze Radome air conditioning system includes various features throughout its construction to minimize shock, vibration, and to maintain continuous operation throughout the mission.
The exterior of the A/C unit features splash-proof stainless steel louvers. Right below the louver is a stainless steel mesh to protect the internal components, all visible from each louver, the intake, and the discharge duct. Fabricated stainless steel handles have been attached to the unit's sides to assist in unit installations. Other features include: an integrated low-pressure gauge, located conveniently on the unit's air discharge, as well as a low-pressure charging port and a high-pressure charging port, a totally enclosed electric box with one-panel-access, all marine compliant electrical 600V copper-tin wires, includes all safety devices, industry standard components, a gravity-assist NPT drain connection located on the unit's drain-pan base, as well as the bottom-center of the unit to allow condensation to be evacuated.
Ocean Breeze quality control and testing are designed to confirm the requirements of the unit's design. The tests can range from a four-hour session to an extended 24-hour test. We do 2,500 hours of life testing at 20 cycles on the vibration simulator. The first test is over 1,500 hours with variable voltage including sweeps from 189 to 251 volts, spikes, brownouts, reverse polarity, fault, interruptions (fast off-to-on and on-to-off cycles to simulate power grid damage). The Ocean Breeze load tank was designed to simulate such harsh conditions. Other testing will be weather resistance: wind, rain, and hot, sunny days to cold nights.
Types of testing to be done for the Ocean Breeze Radome A/C unit are vibration, airflow, temperature, under stress from the load tank which will simulate a machine generating heat at 120 degrees operation. The target for the test is unit performance: to maintain internal volume temperature at 76 degrees Fahrenheit at various voltages and cycles. Unit containment will be tested under such adverse conditions to simulate an active radome aboard ship. Each component was carefully selected, studied, and incorporated into the main design. The A/C unit's internal volume is so restrictive that every component was integrated by vibration isolators to either another component, or insulated. Unit panels and connecting accessories are assembled.
Calibrating the equipment necessary to carry out these tests will require time to confirm that each test will be within established parameters. Running these programs will assure that every session's conditions will be identical for all the programmed tests until the parameters of the tests will confirm the unit's requirements.
In post-meetings, after the first series of tests, the data is used to help make improvements to the current design. A deployed improvement in even the smallest component will make a big difference in the overall design. Such revisions have made the Ocean Breeze Radome unit versatile. Meetings with the clients are held to take advantage of the continuously evolving design, and by its recommendations to either incorporated different components or replace current components that will exceed unit operation expectations. Depending on the configuration and layout, the Ocean Breeze Radome A/C unit will change the industry design as we have done in the forty years thus far. Over 100 similar units are currently in use.
